01 Your mission
Turn one catch-all drawer into a place for useful household odds and ends. The goal is retrieval, not making the drawer look as if nobody lives here. Set out a tray for the contents and choose three or four broad categories.
02 Name its actual purpose
Watch what you go to this drawer for. If it is pens, tape, scissors, and small repair supplies, call it a household utility drawer. If it mostly contains keys and outgoing mail, it is an entryway station. A single drawer cannot be every room’s overflow department.
03 Sort by use, not by appearance

04 Create boundaries
Start with small boxes you already own. Make compartments large enough for your real quantities, with some room to retrieve an item. 05 Handle unidentified objects
Give unknown pieces one small container. Attach a note explaining what you think each piece belongs to. During a later repair, you can search that container first. If the container fills, review it; do not open a second branch office. Avoid discarding a part until you know whether it serves something you own.
06 Stopping point
You can find tape in one attempt and return the scissors without rearranging everything. Review the drawer when it becomes hard to close or a category no longer fits. Buy adjustable dividers only after a temporary layout proves useful.
